Smart watches, new cell phone features offer new ways to connect: 5 On Your Side Electronics Guide

CLEVELAND - Cell phones are making so many advancements these days and this holiday season we're getting an eyeful of what's available for you.  We’re kicking off our week-long series on the latest, greatest, and best with cell phones.

The old cartoon strip Dick Tracy featured the detective with a two-way radio on his wrist and now that’s a reality.  And writing is making a comeback in a high-tech way.

“The things that I'm looking for is connectivity,” said cell phone shopper Anthony Jones from Shaker Heights.  He was signing up for another plan with AT&T as he was connecting all of his technology.

"I have two children and a wife so, I wanted them to know where I was instead of always calling me all the time,” he said with a smile. “Hopefully she's not going to see that," he added with a hearty laugh.

That connection is now available on your wrist with a new Samsung watch that links up with your new Samsung cell phone. It answers calls, texts, and even lets people know you're in trouble.

"I can send an S.O.S. that would immediately contact my wife…send her a message, call her and also give her GPS locations of exactly where I'm at,” explained Chad McFadden, who is the Area Retail Sales Manager for AT&T in Cleveland.

The 5 On Your Side savings: AT&T offers the Note 8.0 for $99.99 when bundled with a qualifying Samsung smartphone. The Note includes a stylus for those important hand-written notes.

Consumer Reports says you'll also like the iPhone 5s.

"There's more content then you'll get on other platforms (including) music, movies, anything,” said Mike Gikas, Senior Editor for Electronics at Consumer Reports. CR rates some Android platforms a good choice, too.  “Samsung Galaxy S4, LG 2, you're looking at state-of-the-art mobile technology lots of options for sharing," Gikas added.

Other phones hot this holiday include the Nokia Lumina 1020 with a 41-megapixel camera or the Moto X customized phones in frame colors, lens colors, and screens. It's $99 with a two-year plan.

Another big thing you will find this holiday is big screens. Forget the old, small, compact technology. Now bigger is on display with 5” or more screen sizes.

Whether you're into iPhones or Androids, customers like Jones said they are ready. “There is a lot of stuff and a lot of stuff that I like because I'm kind of geeky,” he said with another laugh.
