CLEVELAND - Now that summer is in full swing, many of you are ready to hit the road on vacation. "Chris's 5 Things" looks at some of the five safest, most affordable summer road trips.
Erie Insurance ranked 10 popular national vacation destinations in terms of crash risk, traffic congestion and gas prices. We narrowed down the list to five destinations that are driveable from northeast Ohio. They are Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Virginia Beach.
According to AAA, when it comes to filling up at the pump, Chicago tops the gas price list at $4.35 per gallon of regular unleaded. New York City and Philadelphia are next, around $3.80. Philadelphia and Virginia Beach are cheapest at around $3.50 per gallon.
When it comes to being stuck in traffic, pack your patience if you're visiting the nation's capital. Washington, D.C. is worst for time spent stuck in traffic. Drivers there spend, on average, 67 hour per commuter each year. On the low end, Virginia Beach drivers average only 43 hours each year inching along.
Your most closely to get in an accident in Washington, D.C. Perhaps surprisingly, your least likely to crack-up in New York City.
