Insurance Drops Woman With Doberman
Caswell Says Dogs Don't Necessarily Have To Be Vicious
Many families consider their dogs a member of the family.
But if you own a certain type of dog, your homeowner's insurance could drop you.
On Your Side Troubleshooter Chris Caswell reports that it happened to Patty Kopp.
Kopp says that her dog a doberman -- isn't vicious but her insurance, which she's had for more than 20 years, dropped her because she owned a dog.
Caswell reports that it all started with a woodburning stove. Patty Kopp's insurance company wanted to inspect it and add it to her homeowner's policy. When the adjuster showed up, he met the dog.
"He's been with us 11 years, and we had two other ones prior to him" she said.
The dog, Raja (pictured, left), didn't jump, snarl or bite the adjuster.
Caswell says that Betcha Didn't Know that some insurance companies will not insure you if you own a Doberman, pit bull, rottweiler, chow or a wolf-hybrid breed.
Kopp found out that some insurance companies would insure her as long as when a company representative came out to inspect that they didn't feel that the dog was a threat.
Caswell says that insurance companies will also drop you if you own a trained attack dog or a dog with a bite history. She adds that a bite history is one bite.
