CLEVELAND -- Your favorite restaurant may be orchestrating a way for you to spend more through the music it plays. A recent study by British researchers shows that what you're listening to in a restaurant actually influences how much you spend, reported NewsChannel5's Angie Lau.The study looked at how much customers spent listening to classical music, pop tunes, or silence.Researchers found that when classical music played, diners spent more, buying fancy coffee, expensive wine and rich desserts.Customer Julie Sauter has an idea about why this happens."If you're listening to hard rock you're not going to feel elegant or posh, so you don't want to spend as much money," said Sauter. At Blue Point Grille, one of Cleveland's poshest restaurants, when classic plays, sales sing.Manager Sam Lindsley agrees with researchers who say when it comes to classical music, diners subconsciously feel more affluent."Music sets the mood, it relaxes our guests. If our guests are relaxed and not distracted in any way, we believe they stay longer and create a better environment for them to spend money and spend time in restaurant," said Lindsley.According to study results, patrons spent 5 percent more when listening to pop tunes, and when classical music was played, they spent 10 percent more. For restaurateurs, it's music to their ears.
