CLEVELAND -- Finding the best deals online is not always easy, and even some seasoned shoppers don't have all the tools they need to get the best bargains.

5 On Your Side consumer specialist Angie Lau reported that secret codes could be the key to saving money, and many of them are pretty easy to find.

For some people, online shopping is the easiest, most hassle-free way to shop.

There are endless options at your fingertips, but for many shoppers, one way that shoppers could save money is still a big secret.

Many shopping Web sites ask you if you have a promotional or secret code, which could save you a percentage on your purchase or even give you free shipping.

These codes are often given to special clientele groups, such as frequent shoppers, travelers going to a convention, and sometimes store credit card holders.

But that's not all -- John Carroll University professor Leroy Brooks says you don't have to be a part of those groups to point and click your way to discounts.

"You can go to a lot of sites, go over a large number of companies and the quote secret codes that they have, and get discounts on merchandise that they have that you can actually order directly on that site," said Brooks.

NewsChannel5 found out about some of the sites where you can find secret codes. They include Currentcodes.com, Dealhunting.com and Discountcodes.com.

The codes can help save you money, but as you shop, remember to check the expiration dates.

Also, be sure you know what the conditions are for the discount. For example, some items may be exempt or you may have to buy a certain amount of merchandise.

You should also always make sure the total cost of your purchase is what you expected.
