Ohio Woman Tells Shoppers She's Buying

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A central Ohio woman faces charges after she told customers in a Columbus store that she had won the lottery and was giving the money away. People said the woman got out of a limousine, walked into a Burlington Coat Factory Tuesday and told everyone in the store that she was going to pay for all of their purchases. Police said all she did was leave customers disappointed.
Woman Offers To Pay For Shoppers Items Customers said they were shocked by her claims. "I said, 'Are you sure, because I can't pay you for this.' She said, 'Honey, I've got $1.5 million, and I've been used all my life, mostly by my family members, and this is just my turn to give back,'" said shopper Carole Hubbard.She invited the customers to call their family to the store."Five-hundred dollars each -- tell your friends and your family. It ends at close today," Linda Brown said.People started calling family and friends and pretty soon Burlington was packed.Store managers said she paid for about $5,000 of merchandise with a debit card before she hit a limit. Then she announced that she was going back to the bank to get some cash. But by 3 p.m., police announced there would be no more shopping sprees.Police arrived to control the crowd and sent everyone away.Investigators have said they know the woman did not win the lottery.She could be charged with inducing panic and fraud.
