Resume Perfection Crucial During Tough Economic Times

By MAX MESSMER Scripps Howard News Service

Job seekers are currently facing a challenging employment market, where there are fewer available jobs and more people competing for open positions. That's why it is more important than ever to send prospective employers a flawless resume and cover letter. Carefully review your documents and run spell-check, but also ask friends or trusted colleagues for additional proofreading help. After all, you can't afford to give a hiring manager any cause to question your professionalism, attention to detail or enthusiasm for the job.

COVER LETTER: "Please write back to me when you can. Although I do understand what it's like to be berried in work."

A "berry" bad spelling error.

"ARTISTIC ABILITIES: Pain and draw."

A tortured artist.

"PROFESSIONAL OVERVIEW: I am a dependable worker who loves to succed."

You failed to proofread carefully.

"QUALIFICATIONS: Recognized for effective professional management of difficult task and situation."

Can you manage problems on a regular basis, or was this a one-time deal?

COVER LETTER: "I have a strong academic background in computer science and accounting. I know that I could apply thiscombination of knowledge and experience to any position."

You came thisclose to impressing us.

"EDUCATION: Diploma in business manement."

A hair-raising mistake.

"JOB DUTIES: Data entry, research, light document editing, computer tasks, faxing and coping."

Sounds like he's having a bad day.

Finally, stick to tradition and lead off your resume with your name and contact information. The following job candidate put this odd headline at the top of his document:

RESUME: "This resume is real."

We assumed as much.
