SANDUSKY, Ohio -- A waterpark resort that opened last summer is closing and laying off 100 employees because of financial problems. The Maui Sands Resort in Sandusky is one of several waterparks that opened in Ohio in recent years as a twist on traditional amusement parks. Company spokesperson Lexi Robinson sayid guests were unhappy with unfinished construction at the park but the main reason for the shutdown is the poor economy. Robinson said people don't have extra money and just aren't taking vacations. The resort opened in June 2008 the new Family Suites Hotel and Indoor Waterpark. The adjoining Hawaiian Cabana Village was scheduled to open this fall, but encountered financing delays.Without the Cabana Village, guests did not receive the resort's total experience, so the decision was made to close until completion, thus enhancing future guest experiences, Robinson said. The resort will reopen in May of 2009. The Cabana Village will be authentically Hawaiian, with restaurants, a bar along side a deep water surf simulator, a stage and seating area for nightly luaus and shows by Hawaiians performers, a spa and salon, a confections and coffee bar, retail space, large meetings rooms, a 75-game arcade and 50 cabanas with built-in amenities.Maui Sands Resort will retain a minimal staff of employees for reservations and marketing activities, and will be rehiring in May. Guests with existing reservations during the shut down period will be given a two for one credit for a future stay.
