CLEVELAND -- You may think the green movement is a recent phenomenon. But many companies have been recycling oil for years and using it to cut down on energy bills. At Cleveland Transmission Supply, they disassemble, clean and rebuild old transmissions. They wanted to find a use for the leftover oil and they did.Oil from transmissions drips down into a container that is then filtered and used in a Clean Burn furnace. The huge heater can use any type of waste oil to generate heat.Mike Swartzentruber of Clean Burn said, "It'll burn anything from as lightweight as diesel fuel, transmission oil, kerosene, engine oil, hydraulic fluid to gear oils, the nice thing is they don't have to be separated or processed beforehand."By using the waste oil, businesses can save up to $10,000 a year. Clean Burn has been in business for nearly 30 years, but their sales have doubled in the past decade.Savings is the No. 1 reason but there's also a significant environmental impact when you burn the oil onsite, because there's no transportation involved."The emissions from those trucks, potential spills, anytime oil is transported from one place to another there is a potential for a spill," said Swartzentruber. And the workers at Cleveland Transmission Supply said the heat is better than before, it's very efficient, and the motor oil that was being wasted is now being put to good use.
