CLEVELAND -- Many TV viewers are buying converter boxes so that they will be able to use their old televisions after the digital switchover in February.Others are holding off because it sounds like a hassle, but that is not the case because you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find once you turn the box on, reported NewsChannel5's John Matarese.Megan Pollock, with the Consumer Electronics Association, said not only is it simple to hook up a digital converter box, but many people don't realize that the converter boxes come with cool added features. One bonus is sub-channels. Most ABC, NBC and CBS stations send a second channel, which is often weather radar."Not only your first channel, your typical news channel, but also point something channels -- point 3, point 4 -- all-day news, or all-day weather," said Pollack.Another bonus is that PBS stations send three or four sub-channels with world programming or full-time children's programming."In almost every market I've been to, I've seen PBS have four or five channels, that are on all day," said Pollack. If you are used to just four channels, get ready for 10 or more without cable or a dish.Another feature is an onscreen guide, even if you have an old television set."When was the last time an old TV had what you're watching, when it's going to be playing?" said Pollack. If you don't have cable or satellite, order a government coupon and buy your converter box soon.Just make sure your antenna picks up both UHF and VHF signals to get all the local stations.
