SAN ANTONIO -- An uneasy economy appears to be taking a toll on marriages in some areas of the United States.
According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, national divorce rates dipped slightly in 2007. But this year, they are creeping up in some counties. The Bexar County, Texas, district clerk's office said 4,913 divorces were filed from January to June in 2008 compared to 4,766 during the same time period in 2007, reported KSAT-TV in San Antonio.District Clerk Margaret Montemayor said tight times are a significant factor in the increase in filings."Mostly it's about the economy, you know," Montemayor said. "Gas is going up. (Couples are) losing their house. Groceries are more expensive."Steven Benke, an attorney who specializes in divorce, agreed with Montemayor about the connection between the economy and the divorce rate."I think people are in a financial crunch," he said.Montemayor said that marriage is a two-way street that gets bumpier when money gets tight. While the summer is usually a slow time for divorce filings, Montemayor said with the beginning of school right around the corner and the economy still struggling, she expects the number of filings to continue an upward trend.National divorce rates for 2008 are not yet available.
