PORTLAND, Ore. -- A trend at the supermarket has shoppers paying more money for less food, Portland station KPTV reported.Several brands have scooped away the amount of ice cream consumers get for their money. Companies like Breyers and Dreyer's said they've had to shrink packaging to avoid raising their prices.A comparison of two ice cream cartons shows a newer carton holding 1.5 quarts of ice cream, compared to an older carton holding 1.75 quarts. The cartons cost the same and most shoppers haven't noticed."The package looks the same, but the content is less," said shopper Owen Stephens. The trend isn't limited to just ice cream. Shoppers will find 45-ounce butter containers, compared to older 48-ounce containers they found on grocery store shelves in the past.Companies said the reason behind the packaging changes is because of a price increase in food. The price of milk has risen about 26 percent in the last year and the cost of eggs is up 40 percent. When dairy products cost more to produce, they cost more for shoppers. And while those prices rise, the container size may drop.
