Coupon Guy Helps Shoppers Get Best Thanksgiving Deals

Preparing the Thanksgiving feast is stressful enough. 5 On Your Side consumer reporter Angie Lau doesn't want shoppers to stress about getting the best deal.

She enlisted the help of Joe Daugirdas, also known as the coupon guy. He uses coupons for nearly everything he buys.

Daugirdas shops at stores that offer double coupons so he saves even more. He goes by something called the 50-percent off rule. Basically, he tries to buy items at half off. Also, in order to save time, he matches the circulars to his coupons before he goes to the store.

Check: Grocery Deals

He said bring a list so you don’t have to waste your time going back and forth to the store because you forgot something.

Every grocery store carries different brands. Sometimes it pays to choose the store brand, Lau reported. At Dave's Supermarkets, Butterball turkeys are $1.39 a pound. If you go with the store brand you'll pay 79 cents a brand.

It's the same story at the other stores. If you really want to save, check out Aldi's and Marc's for $9.99 Butterball and Honeysuckle turkeys for the 12- and 13- pound versions. but some stores are already running out, so shop soon.

Daugirdas also said to look for coupons throughout the store. Lau found coupons for Thanksgiving items on wine. She said there were rebates to be found, as well. If you buy a 12 pack of Miller beer, with a $75 purchase, you can send for a $35 rebate.

Pay attention to the unit pricing. For example, she found a 15-ounce can of Libby’s selling for $1.49. The larger can sells for 30 cents more and you get nearly double the amount.

Wow Deals:
  • Dave's: 69 cents for Campbell's canned brown gravy
  • Heinen's: $3.99 pumpkin pies in the bakery section
  • Giant Eagle: Sara Lee homemade frozen pies, two for the price of one. You save $5.98
