Giant Eagle To Buy Area Tops Stores

CLEVELAND -- Several northeast Ohio Tops stores are being sold to rival chain Giant Eagle.NewsChannel5 reported that 18 of the supermarket's 46 area locations are being sold in the deal.Thirteen of the stores are in Cuyahoga County; other stores are located in Summit, Lorain, Medina and Huron counties.A Giant Eagle press release said that the acquisitions will include 13 corporately owned Giant Eagle supermarkets, one independently-owned supermarket and four Dave's Supermarkets with Giant Eagle pharmacies.Tops and Giant Eagle are working with union leaders in order to preseve as many full and part-time jobs in the region as possible, Tops said in a news release.Tops announced over the summer that it was putting all of its Ohio stores up for sale.Announcements regarding the other 28 stores will be made when agreements are finalized, a Tops representative said.Here is a list of the stores being taken over by Giant Eagle and the dates they are scheduled to open.December 2006
