Giant Eagle To Buy Area Tops Stores

POSTED: 3:57 pm EDT October 10, 2006

Several northeast Ohio Tops stores are being sold to rival chain Giant Eagle.

NewsChannel5 reported that 18 of the supermarket's 46 area locations are being sold in the deal.

Thirteen of the stores are in Cuyahoga County; other stores are located in Summit, Lorain, Medina and Huron counties.

A Giant Eagle press release said that the acquisitions will include 13 corporately owned Giant Eagle supermarkets, one independently-owned supermarket and four Dave's Supermarkets with Giant Eagle pharmacies.

Tops and Giant Eagle are working with union leaders in order to preseve as many full and part-time jobs in the region as possible, Tops said in a news release.
