Blue Jays Edge Twins In Extras

POSTED: 12:30 am EDT September 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - John McDonald's hit in the bottom of the 11th inning sent Toronto past Minnesota, 5-4, in the middle contest of a three-game set from Rogers Centre.

Eddie Guardado (3-4) allowed a leadoff double to Scott Rolen and a single from Travis Snider. Boof Bonser got the nod but surrendered the game-deciding single to McDonald, a line drive to the warning track in center.

"I'm up there looking to hit the first fastball," said McDonald. "He did me a little bit of a favor by throwing the first one high and let me sit there and wait for the next one."

Jesse Carlson (6-1) got the win by holding the Twins at bay in the top of the 11th.

Joe Inglett hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have won four games in a row. A.J. Burnett was charged with six hits and three runs, fanning eight with four walks in his start of 6 2/3 innings.

Joe Mauer had a pair of hits and drove in three while Brendan Harris knocked in the other run for the Twins, who have dropped two straight and three of four. Starter Nick Blackburn went 6 2/3 innings and gave up six hits and three runs -- two earned -- with six strikeouts.

"I felt a lot better today, I felt more like what I've been trying to do," said Blackburn. "I was confident with all my pitches. I felt sharp."

Minnesota fell one game behind Chicago in the race for the AL Central crown, after the White Sox topped Cleveland, 4-2, earlier Wednesday.

Snider singled with one down in the third, then Inglett launched a two-run shot to right which put the Jays on the board.

Minnesota didn't threaten until the seventh, when Mauer's double to the wall in left-center off Scott Downs gave the visitors a one-run edge.

Toronto answered in the home half as Rod Barajas singled and was lifted for pinch-runner Kevin Mench. After a Lyle Overbay groundout moved Mench to second, Rolen's hot smash to short eluded Punto and allowed the tying run to score.

Minnesota went ahead in the ninth. Justin Morneau doubled and Jason Kubel walked. A wild pitch advanced both runners and Harris beat out an infield hit to score Morneau for a 4-3 lead.

Toronto knotted the game in the home half as Gregg Zaun walked, then Twins right-fielder Jason Pridie booted Snider's two-out base hit so that pinch- runner Curtis Thigpen came around from first to score.

The Jays failed to score in the 10th despite loading the bases with one out.

Game Notes
