Colorado Rockies (32-46) At Kansas City Royals (35-43), 8:10 P.m.
(Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals will try for their first ever sweep of the Colorado Rockies tonight in the finale of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Despite having one of the worst records in the American League, the Royals are making sure they are a part of the AL's recent dominance of the NL. Kansas City is a major-league best 11-3 in interleague play this year and has handled the Rockies in both games of this series so far. Colorado was 7-2 versus the AL this season before running into Kansas City. The Royals have won four straight games overall -- scoring a total of 31 runs in that span -- and nine of their last 10, with all of those games coming against the NL. Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer in Tuesday's 7-3 victory, while Ross Gload and Mike Aviles each had two hits and an RBI. Aviles is hitting .444 (8-for-18) with eight RBI on Kansas City's current nine-game homestand. The Royals are 5-1 so far on that residency. David DeJesus, meanwhile, is riding a 10-game hitting streak and has posted a .375 average (15-for-40), three homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored on the run. Zack Greinke (7-4) lasted six innings on Tuesday and gave up three runs on nine hits while fanning 10 batters. Luke Hochevar starts tonight for the Royals and is 1-0 over his last four starts despite a 4.63 earned run average. He hasn't lost since May 29 and earned a no-decision on Friday against San Francisco. The right-hander gave up four runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings. Hochevar is 4-5 with a 4.86 ERA this year. He has never faced the Rockies and was born in Denver, where he shined at Fowler High School in both baseball and basketball. Aaron Cook starts for the Rockies and will try for his ML-best tying 11th win of the season. He had won his last four decisions before losing to the Mets on Friday, when he gave up six runs on a season-high 12 hits over seven innings, allowing two homers in his first loss since May 20. The right-hander has still been Colorado's best starter this season, as he has posted a 10-4 mark and 3.57 ERA in 16 starts. He is also 6-2 with a 3.86 ERA in nine road starts this season and faces the Royals for the first time. Matt Holliday homered, while Ryan Spilborghs and Brad Hawpe chipped in two hits and an RBI apiece last night for the Rockies, who have dropped three straight and four of five. Holliday has now hit safely in his last 11 games, going 18-for-41 (.439) in that span with two homers and 10 RBI while lifting his season average to .332. Jeff Baker, meanwhile, had his career-high nine-game hit streak halted with an 0-for-4 effort. The reigning NL Player of the Week had hit .361 (13-36) over that run. The Royals and Rockies are meeting in Kansas City for the first time after the Rockies went 5-4 versus Colorado over three series held at Coors Field. The Royals did take two of three versus the Rockies in Colorado last year.
