Cleveland Indians (49-64) At Toronto Blue Jays (59-56), 7:07 P.m.
(Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays attempt to keep up their recent success at the Rogers Centre when the Cleveland Indians venture across the border tonight for the opener of a three-game series. Toronto began its current seven-game homestand by winning all four matchups with the fading Oakland Athletics, including Thursday's 6-4 victory that capped off the club's first-ever four-game sweep of the A's. The Blue Jays have now won 14 of their last 18 contests at the Rogers Centre and are an impressive 34-23 at home for the season. The Jays snapped a 4-4 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Joe Inglett was hit by a pitch from Oakland reliever Jerry Blevins with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead tally, and Brad Wilkerson followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Those two runs helped A.J. Burnett (14-9) record his 14th win of the season. The Toronto starter worked the first six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out six. B.J. Ryan closed things out in the ninth to notch his 22nd save. Scott Rolen and John McDonald each knocked in a pair of runs for the surging Blue Jays, with McDonald and Inglett both collecting two hits on the night. While Toronto has been dominant at home recently, the AL Central cellar- dwelling Indians have floundered on the road all year long. The disappointing Tribe is a woeful 20-38 as the visitor this season and dropped four of six on a present nine-game road trip. Cleveland's two most recent setbacks came at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, who put forth a furious ninth-inning rally to deal the Indians a 10-7 defeat in Wednesday's rubber match of a three-game set. Trailing 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Eric Hinske doubled home a run for Tampa before Gabe Gross followed with a two-run homer off Cleveland reliever Edward Mujica to tie the score. Masa Kobayashi (4-5) then entered for the Indians and gave up a single and a walk before serving up Carlos Pena's game-winning three-run homer. The loss spoiled a terrific offensive day for Cleveland shortstop Jhonny Peralta, who went 5-for-5 with a homer and two RBI. Andy Marte added a two-run double and Franklin Gutierrez had a solo home run in defeat. Anthony Reyes will make his debut in a Cleveland uniform when the former St. Louis Cardinal toes the rubber tonight. Reyes was acquired by the Indians from the Cards on July 26 and made a pair of starts for Cleveland's Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, winning both outings while yielding just four runs over a 13-inning span. Reyes had spent parts of the last four seasons in St. Louis and compiled a 10-24 record with a 5.38 earned run average in his 53 major-league appearances, 38 of which have been starts. He was 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 10 games -- all in relief -- with the Cardinals this year. This will be the 26-year-old's first career clash with Toronto. David Purcey makes his third start for the Blue Jays since being recalled from the minors in late July this evening. The former first-round pick earned his first big league victory when he held Seattle to three runs over six innings at the Rogers Centre on July 26, but was hurt by the long ball in his most recent mound trip. Purcey gave up just three hits in five innings against Texas on Sunday, but all were homers that accounted for five Rangers' runs, which saddled the left- hander with the loss. Like Reyes, Purcey will be making his first career appearance against tonight's opponent. These two teams faced off in Cleveland back in May, with the Indians winning three of the four encounters. The Blue Jays did take two of three from the Tribe in Cleveland's only visit to Toronto last season.
