Padres Keep Coaching Staff Intact For 2010

POSTED: 1:42 am EDT October 26, 2009

(Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres are keeping manager Bud Black's coaching staff intact for the 2010 season, handing out one-year contract extensions on Thursday to the group.

Retained to reprise their current roles with the team were bench coach Ted Simmons, hitting coach Randy Ready, pitching coach Darren Balsley, first base coach Rick Renteria, third base coach Glenn Hoffman and bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds.

Black had his contract extended through the 2010 season with a club option for 2011 back on August 7.

Simmons returns for his 11th year with San Diego and second as bench coach. Ready will begin his first full season as hitting coach in 2010 after taking over the job on July 31 of last season. He had previously managed the Triple-A Portland Beavers since 2008 and returns for his seventh season with the Padres organization.

Balsley has served as pitching coach for San Diego since 2003 and returns for his seventh full season at the position. Renteria is entering his third season as the Padres first base coach while Hoffman is set to begin his fifth season as the club's third base coach. Akerfelds returns for a ninth season as bullpen coach.

The Padres finished last in the National League West in 2009 with a 75-87 record.
