Manuel With Phils Through Game 5

POSTED: 10:27 pm EDT October 11, 2008

(Sports Network) - Charlie Manuel will manage the Philadelphia Phillies through a possible Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, but then return to Roanoke, VA to attend the funeral of his mother.

Manuel's mother, June, passed away Friday at the age of 87. Manuel, though, was in the dugout for the Phillies' 8-5 win later in the day over the Los Angeles Dodgers. That gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead in the NLCS with Game 3, 4 and possibly 5 in Los Angeles.

Game 5 would be Wednesday. Manuel is scheduled to attend a viewing for his mother on Thursday in Buena Vista, FL, where he grew up, and then head to Roanoke for a Friday morning funeral. If there is a Game 6, it would be Friday night in Philadelphia, and Manuel could return in time to manage the game.

After this past Friday's game, Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino found out that his grandmother had passed away. Victorino is trying to attend that funeral in Hawaii on a scheduled off day in the series.
