(Sports Network) - Mark Teixeira and Juan Rivera each drove in two runs, as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pounded the Detroit Tigers, 7-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set from Comerica Park. Gary Matthews Jr. finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored for the Angels, who have won five of their last seven games. Torii Hunter added a solo home run in the victory. Ervin Santana (15-5) gave up one run on six hits in 7 1/3 innings to get the win. He also struck out eight and walked one. Curtis Granderson homered for the Tigers, who have dropped eight of their last 11 contests. It was another rough outing for Kenny Rogers (9-13), who lost for the seventh time in his last eight trips to the bump. The 43-year-old was tagged for six runs on eight hits in just two-plus innings of work. Aquilino Lopez and Nate Robertson combined to allow one run on six hits in seven innings of relief.

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Joey Gathright's RBI single in the 10th inning led the Kansas City Royals to a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the first game of a doubleheader from Kauffman Stadium. In the 10th, Esteban German reached base on an error from Bobby Crosby and he was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from David DeJesus. After Mike Aviles was issued an intentional walk, Gathright singled to left to score German and win the game. This was a makeup of Wednesday's game, which was rained out due to the remnants of Hurricane Gustav passing through the area. DeJesus went 3- for-4 with a run scored while Billy Butler hit a two-run double for the Royals. Brian Bannister started the game and gave up four runs -- just one earned -- on seven hits in seven innings of work. Joakim Soria (2-3) got the win for pitching two scoreless innings. Jack Cust hit a two-run double and Joey Devine (4-1) was charged with the loss in 1 1/3 innings of work for the Athletics. Dana Eveland started on the hill and gave up four runs on 10 hits in six innings of play. In the nightcap, Jose Guillen went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored as the Kansas City Royals swept the doubleheader and three-game series against the Oakland Athletics with a 9-6 win. Alberto Callaspo drove in two runs while Mike Aviles went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Royals, who have won four of their last five games. Kyle Davies (6-6) gave up just one run on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Ryan Sweeney went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI while Dan Meyer (0-4) gave up eight runs -- seven earned -- on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings of work for the Athletics, who have dropped five of their last six games.

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Travis Snider finished 3-for-3 with a home run and Jesse Litsch hurled nine scoreless innings as Toronto routed Minnesota, 9-0, in the finale of a three-game set from Rogers Centre. Adam Lind had three hits and drove in a run for the Blue Jays, who swept the series and have won five straight. Vernon Wells homered and drove in two runs, while Joe Inglett and Alex Rios chipped in two RBI each. Litsch (10-8) recorded his second shutout of the season and of his career, allowing four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Denard Span had a pair of hits for the Twins, who have lost four of five and slipped 1 1/2 games behind idle Chicago in the AL Central. Starter Kevin Slowey (11-9) took the loss for Minnesota, charged with 10 hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 7, New York 5

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Scott Kazmir pitched six strong innings as the Tampa Bay Rays avoided the sweep with a 7-5 win over the New York Yankees at Tropicana Field. Kazmir (11-6) gave up just one hit with five walks and seven strikeouts for the Rays, who have won six of their last eight games. Willy Aybar went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three RBI. With the win, Tampa moved 3 1/2 games ahead of idle Boston for first place in the AL East. Derek Jeter hit a three-run home run and Alex Rodriguez added a solo shot for the Yankees, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. Darrell Rasner (5-10) was banged up for five runs on six hits in just 1 1/3 innings of work.
