Estes Leads Padres Past Brewers

POSTED: 11:29 pm EDT September 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - Shawn Estes' impressive return to the mound was backed by a pair of RBI from Nick Hundley and Luis Rodriguez as the San Diego Padres topped the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 in the opener of a four-game series.

Estes (2-1), sidelined since May 28 with a fractured left thumb, scattered seven hits, a walk and a run in his six-inning start for the Padres, who snapped a nine-game road losing streak and three straight overall.

Adrian Gonzalez doubled, worked two walks and scored a pair of runs, and Will Venable hit his first career home run for the victors.

Jeff Suppan (10-8) took the loss in Milwaukee's fourth straight setback, allowing five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. Every Brewers starter had one hit with J.J. Hardy tallying a solo home run.

The Brewers are now five games behind the idle Chicago Cubs in the NL Central race and lead Philadelphia by four games in the wild-card hunt.

The clubs exchanged runs in the second as Hundley's sacrifice fly in the top half was countered by Bill Hall's RBI groundout in the bottom.

The Padres went ahead for good when Hundley doubled down the left-field line to score Gonzalez in the fourth. The club tacked on another run an inning later as Brian Giles led off with a single, moved up 90 feet on Suppan's balk, and scored on Rodriguez's single to right.

In the sixth, Venable's lead-off homer made it a 4-1 game and Rodriguez added a run later in the frame on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center.

Hardy's 22nd home run of the season to open the seventh cut the Brewers' deficit to three, but Trevor Hoffman pitched a scoreless ninth inning to notch his 28th save of the season and seal the victory.

Game Notes

Suppan had his six-start unbeaten streak snapped...Corey Hart's double in the third extended his hitting streak to 10 games...In the second game of the series on Friday, the Padres' Josh Geer (1-0) tries to give CC Sabathia (9-0) his first loss in a Milwaukee uniform.
