POSTED: 1:31 am EDT August 22, 2008

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Carlos Zambrano was brilliant on the hill and helped his own cause with a home run as Chicago edged Cincinnati, 3-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Wrigley Field. Pitching with a cracked molar, Zambrano (13-5) allowed just one run on six hits in seven innings for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who have won three of their last four games and eight of 10. Mark DeRosa added a homer and Ryan Theriot finished 2-for-4 for Chicago. Jay Bruce and Joey Votto both homered for the Reds, who have dropped four of their past six encounters. Josh Fogg (2-6) surrendered three runs on four hits in four innings en route to the loss and is now in the midst of a six-outing winless skid.

Final Score: Los Angeles 3, Colorado 1

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - James Loney was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI and Derek Lowe silenced the recently resurgent Rockies to help the Dodgers to a 3-1 victory over Colorado in the series finale of a three-game set. Lowe (10-10) struck out seven and surrendered just one run on four hits and a pair of walks for Los Angeles, which finished a ten-game homestand at 7-3. Jorge De La Rosa (6-7) was nearly as effective as Lowe, allowing two runs -- just one earned -- on four hits and two walks but was credited with the loss. Clint Barmes was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Colorado, which won the first five games of a six-game road trip.

Final Score: San Francisco 4, Florida 3

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Marlins reliever Kevin Gregg's wild pitch in bottom of the ninth inning scored Emmanuel Burriss to send San Francisco past Florida, 4-3, in the finale of a three-game series. Gregg (6-6) walked Burriss with one out, and the speedster stole second with Randy Winn at the plate. Winn's fly ball to left moved Burriss to third then pinch- hitter Bengie Molina was walked intentionally. With Fred Lewis settling in, Gregg uncorked a pitch which completely eluded catcher John Baker allowing the winning run to score. Aaron Rowand, Eugenio Velez and Ryan Rohlinger knocked in runs for the Giants, who took two of three in the set and have won four of five overall. Brian Wilson (2-2) got the win after hurling a scoreless ninth. Starter Matt Palmer allowed six hits and two runs over six innings. Dan Uggla homered for the Marlins, who have dropped three of four. Luis Gonzalez and Josh Willingham added an RBI in the loss. Florida's Josh Johnson yielded nine hits and three runs over six full frames.

Final Score: Washington 4, Philadelphia 3

Philadelphia,PA (Sports Network) - Joel Hanrahan navigated two innings for his fourth save after Austin Kearns drove in the eventual winning run in the eighth, as Washington snapped its 12-game losing skid with a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia. Tim Redding was solid in the start for Washington, which won for the first time since August 7th. Redding gave up one run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk over six frames. Saul Rivera (4-5) won despite giving up the tying and go-ahead run at the time in the bottom of the seventh. The Nationals won for just the second time in 67 tries when trailing after seven frames. Anderson Hernandez, Cristian Guzman and Ryan Zimmerman each notched a pair of hits in the win. Jamie Moyer gave up three runs or less for the 14th straight start, but didn't factor into the decision. The southpaw gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks over 6 2/3 frames. Ryan Madson (3-2) gave up a pair of runs in the eighth to suffer the loss. Shane Victorino and Chase Utley collected two hits apiece in defeat. The Mets finished off a sweep of Atlanta Thursday night, moving 2 1/2 games up on the Phillies in the National League East race.

Final Score: New York 5, Atlanta 4

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Omar Infante's fielding blunder on Carlos Delgado's liner to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning brought home the deciding run as the New York Mets escaped with a 5-4 win and three- game sweep of the Atlanta Braves. With Vladimir Nunez (0-1) on the mound, David Wright smoked a one-out double and Carlos Beltran was intentionally walked in front of Delgado, who sliced an opposite-field drive to Infante. The left fielder appeared in position to make the play but had the ball glance off his glove as he went to the ground. Wright was more than halfway to third when Infante touched the ball and came around to score the winner without a play at the plate. Delgado was awarded a single and finished 5-for-5 while knocking in three runs. Wright was 3-for-4, scoring three runs to go along with two doubles and a solo homer for the Mets, who have won nine of 10 and increased their NL East lead to 2 1/2 games over the Phillies, who lost to the Nationals on Thursday. Luis Ayala (2-8), in his second appearance with New York since being acquired in a trade with Washington, picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Yunel Escobar was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a home run, and Brian McCann also chipped in three hits and two RBI for the Braves, who have lost five straight and 10 of 11.

Final Score: Arizona 4, San Diego 1

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Brandon Webb pitched seven solid frames to pick up his big-league best 19th victory, as Arizona closed out a three-game sweep of San Diego, 4-1. Webb (19-4) scattered three hits and nary a run with three walks and eight strikeouts in winning his sixth straight start. The sinker-baller is unbeaten over his last 11 starts (8-0). The 19th win is a new career high, as Webb won 18 games a season ago. Conor Jackson completed a hot series with two RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have won six of seven overall. Jackson knocked in six runs over the three-game sweep. Arizona's victory kept it two games ahead of the surging Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West division race. Chad Reineke (1-1) was hit with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts over six frames. Edgar Gonzalez's pinch-hit single off Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon scored San Diego's lone run in its fourth straight defeat.
