O's, Nats Begin Beltway Series

(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles try for their third straight win this evening when they open a three-game interleague series with the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.

Baltimore completed a two-game sweep of the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, as Jay Payton hit his fourth career grand slam and drove in five runs to help rally the O's to a 6-3 win.

Nick Markakis knocked in the other run for the Orioles, who have won five of their last six following a season-high five-game skid.

Daniel Cabrera (4-1) went seven innings and allowed three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and no walks to record his second straight win. George Sherrill pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save.

Hoping to keep the O's in the win column tonight will be 24-year-old left- hander Garrett Olson, who is 2-0 with a 2.95 earned run average in three starts. Olson picked up the win on Saturday in Kansas City, as he held the Royals to three runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 frames.

He has never faced the Nationals.

Washington will counter with right-hander Shawn Hill, who has yet to record a decision in any of his five starts this season. Hill pitched well enough to win on Sunday against Florida, as he allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, but did not factor in his team's 5-4 loss.

Hill, who is pitching to a 3.56 ERA this season, will be making his first-ever start against the Orioles.

Washington enters tonight's matchup after taking three of four from the New York Mets. In the finale of that set on Thursday, Willie Harris made a spectacular diving catch in left field to rob the Mets of a potential tying run in the ninth inning, and the Nationals doubled Carlos Beltran off third base to end the game to hold on for a 1-0 victory at Shea Stadium.

Felipe Lopez hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth, an inning after the Nationals broke up Mike Pelfrey's no-hit bid.

Jason Bergmann (1-1) struck out nine over seven innings to get the victory. He allowed three hits and walked two. Jon Rauch threw the eventful ninth inning for his ninth save.

Washington today activated Dmitri Young from the 15-day disabled list. The 34- year-old went on the DL April 8 due to a lower back sprain and hit .375 in three games with Double-A Harrisburg during a rehab assignment.

Young's return will help compensate for the loss of Nick Johnson, who landed on the 15-day DL yesterday due to a torn tendon sheath in his right wrist. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Washington took four of six in last year's edition of the Beltway Series.

Baltimore was just 6-12 in interleague action a year ago, while Washington split its 18 games with the Junior Circuit. The O's also lost eight of their nine interleague games at home.
