Duquesne Extends Deal For Women's Hoops Coach McConnell-Serio

Pittsburgh, PA -- (Sports Network) - Duquesne University extended the contract of women's head basketball coach Suzie McConnell-Serio through the 2013-14 season on Wednesday.McConnell-Serio, who was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame this past June, was named the ninth head coach in school history in April of 2007. After posting a 15-15 record in 2008, the team finished with just seven wins in 2007, she guided the team to a 20-12 record and a WNIT appearance this past season. Her 35 wins are the most in the school's history for a two-year span. "Suzie has taken the Duquesne women's basketball program to new heights in a very short period of time," said director of athletics Greg Amodio. "Her proven ability as a leader and teacher of the game, combined with an unparalleled work ethic has built a solid foundation for the future. Suzie and her staff have recruited the type of student-athletes who represent Duquesne University in an exemplary manner, on the court, in the classroom and in the community. I look forward to Suzie being part of our program for years to come."
A Pittsburgh native, McConnell-Serio was a first-team All-American at Penn State and played for a pair of United States Olympic teams. She played for the Cleveland Rockers of the WNBA for three seasons and earned All-WNBA first-team honors in her first year. McConnell-Serio was also the head coach of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx from 2003 through 2006. She was named coach of the year in 2004. McConnell-Serio also spent 13 years as a successful high school coach, capturing three Class AAAA State Championships and compiling a record of 321-86 at Pittsburgh's Oakland Catholic.
