In a move that surprised some, Pope Francis said in a recent interview that he encouraged a woman to breastfeed her baby in public.
The interview was published in Italian news service La Stampa. In response to a question about hunger, the Pope told a story about a woman he saw during a public appearance who was holding a crying infant.
I said to her: madam, I think the child’s hungry. “Yes, it’s probably time…” she replied. “Please give it something to eat!” I said. She was shy and didn’t want to breastfeed in public, while the Pope was passing. I wish to say the same to humanity: give people something to eat! That woman had milk to give to her child; we have enough food in the world to feed everyone.
Are you surprised by what the Pope said - do you think women should be unashamed to breastfeed in public?
