New mosques built with funding changes

LOS ANGELES - A new mosque in the San Gabriel Valley is the latest Islamic worship center that's been built in Southern California over the last several years.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the new mosques have been funded entirely by local Muslims, who have been settling in the region since the 1960s. Prior to 2001, mosques were often funded by foreigners.

Stricter government scrutiny of foreign investments from Islamic countries after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, coupled with the reluctance of local Muslims to accept foreign donations, helped change the practice.

There are now more than 2,100 mosques in the U.S.
