First lady hosts Hindu celebration

WASHINGTON - Michelle Obama has hosted a White House observance of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.
The first lady told celebrants that the administration wants "to honor and embrace all of the many cultures and faith traditions that make us who we are as Americans."
She was introduced by one of the U.S. military's Hindu chaplains, Air Force Lt. Col. Ravi Chaudhary.
The ceremony featured the lighting of a Diwali lamp, representing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
The first lady noted there's still evil in the world, such as the Sikh temple massacre last year in Oak Creek, Wis.  But she said Sikhs, who also observe Diwali, responded to the violence with forgiveness, educational outreach and public service.
