WACO, Texas - Baylor University says it's committing nearly $300,000 to a Texas church that's clearing away homes destroyed by a deadly fertilizer plant explosion.
The university said Wednesday that it will provide $290,000 from its relief fund for the First Baptist Church in the town of West, where 15 people died and hundreds of buildings were destroyed in the April explosion.
The church has made demolition a focus of its work. Many residents were either uninsured or didn't have demolition included in their coverage -- an extra cost of as much as $10,000 or more.
The church has knocked down 57 homes so far, with plans to clear another 50 to 60 homes.
This past Sunday, First Baptist Pastor John Crowder told his congregation that West will recover if they give God the glory.
