CLEVELAND -- You don't have to pay $30 or $50 to get a decent bottle of wine. There are abundant choices under $15 or even under $10 a bottle. Jack Churlik at Heinen's lined up some bargains. "We've got five great wines here under $10." First he suggested Red Guitar, that goes well with burgers and pizza for $8.99. Next, Churlik selected Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. He said, "This is a light Italian, dry very light, we can't keep this on the shelf. The cost is just $6.99." It goes well with pizza and pasta. Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa is another great find for just $8.99. It's dark plum red in color with black currant, plum, earth and spice flavors. Another favorite, Churlik said, is Malbecs from Argentina but the grapes used come from the southwest of France. Malbec doesn't have that black currant fruitiness of Cabernet; but a little darker more savory spice to it. The cost is $9.99. A personal favorite is Vin Hunter label Sauvignon Blanc. The smell is very fresh and the grapefruit and banana hits you right away. It's a crisp, delicious summer wine. Our resident oenophile, (which means "wine lover"), Chief Meteorologist Mark Johnson, said his favorite Ohio wine is the Ferrante Riesling. You can get it at the local grocery for about $10. He said it has tremendous flavor and it's grown in Lake Erie appellation in northeast Ohio. It goes great with chicken, fish, or just on a warm summer night. It's best chilled to 50 degrees.
