BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- When some of the biggest names in golf come to Canterbury for the Senior PGA Championship, it'll be one more historic event for the legendary golf course. It will be the 13th major tournament at Canterbury. And the country club is only the second club in the country to have all five men's tournaments. Golf history at Canterbury runs deep. Walter Hagen won the Western Open at the course in 1932. Jack Nicklaus won the PGA Championship in 1973 at Canterbury and the Master's jacket, won by Henry Picard in 1932, is one of only two displayed outside of Augusta. Picard was Canterbury's head pro for almost 20 years. Michael Kernicki is Canterbury's current host PGA professional. He said the course is being reconfigured for the Senior PGA to be more fan and television friendly. The players first hole will actually be Canterbury's 10th. But those infamous final three holes remain the same. "The three finishing holes at Canterbury are arguably the best finishing holes in all of golf. It's all gonna happen here. Whoever wins tournament will have to successfully negotiate 16, 17 and 18 for four rounds," said Kernicki. Course changes and other requirements for hosting the golf championship have been more than a year in the making with the dedication of 1400 volunteers. There is so much that goes into hosting an event such as this. Parking, medical services, transportation for players and families are just some of the committees volunteers are helping coordinate. At least 40,000 spectators are expected, and millions of dollars for the local economy will be welcomed. the tournament tees off May 21st and finishes Sunday, May 24th. The PGA Foundation will also donate more than $100,000 to local charities. For more information, go to www.seniorpga2009.com.
