"Total shock and awe" is how the father of a local Marine described his son's heroic return home from Iraq.

NewsChannel5's Debora Lee reported that Lance Cpl. Jim Klingel (pictured, left) was wounded and is now home in Medina County recuperating.

Klingel's father said his son has always been his hero, and now the young man is one of the nation's heroes. But the Marine said he was just doing his job.

The job left him with shrapnel in his leg and a broken arm, and he's also lost some of his hearing.

Klingel's company was first to cross the border into Iraq. Last week while the Marines were trying to secure a presidential palace, they had a run-in with the Special Republican Guard.

"I got ambushed in Baghdad and the vehicle I was in has a 400-pound door and the first RPG hit and blew the door off and crushed my arm in between in it and the second one exploded by my face," Klingel said.

Klingel said he used to watch war movies when he was growing up in Medina County and always thought the guys in those movies were really cool.

The Marine is going to get a Purple Heart for his bravery.
