Grenade Attack Injures Cincinnati-Area Man
U.S. Soldier Held In Kuwait
FLORENCE, Ky. -- A man from the Cincinnati area injured in a grenade attack at a U.S. Air Force Base in Kuwait is recovering in Germany.
Capt. Mark Wisher, 29, of Florence, Ky. is listed in critical but stable condition at Ramstein air base following two surgeries, Cincinnati TV station WLWT reported.Wisher, an air liaison officer serving with the 101st Airborne, suffered serious injuries to his abdomen and minor damage to a leg.Wisher was one of 15 people injured in an attack Saturday involving grenades and small-arms fire at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait. One person was killed in the attack.Sgt. Asan Akbar of the 101st Airborne was taken into custody after the attack.Military officials said Wisher will remain hospitalized for at least two weeks.Wisher's mother, Marilyn Wisher, said she and her son's wife, Tara Wisher, will be traveling to Europe this week.Marilyn Wisher said the call from Tara Wisher came early in the morning."I didn't believe it, she said. "It was 2:30 a.m. We had already seen it on TV and we knew something had happened. She just plainly said, 'Mark's been hurt. He's in surgery right now. They're calling me back when he gets out of surgery.'"Marilyn Wisher said that her son is living his dream, despite his injuries."It started when he was little," she said. "He wanted to be a pilot, an Air Force jet pilot."Mark Wisher spent the last month in Kuwait and has served also in Afghanistan and South Korea.His mother is proud of his career choice, but it has not been easy for her."My stomach's been in knots for months," she said. "I knew he was doing what he wanted to do, but it was still hard."
