NewsChannel5 Reveals Loophole In State Law

A 5 On Your Side investigation uncovered how thousands of Ohio children are exposed to life-threatening risks. Every school in Ohio is supposed to have safety plans and lockdown drills once a year. But Investigator Ron Regan found that day care centers have no such requirement.

Creative Playrooms in Parma is one day care that does practice a standard lockdown drill. Teachers show children what to do if a gunman gets inside the facility.

"We feel if it's prudent enough for the older ones to do it, we definitely should be doing it, and all day cares should be doing it," said Joan Wenk, operator of Creative Playrooms.

In fact, in Ohio, NewsChannel5 found that every public and private school is required to have lockdown drills. Schools are also required to submit blueprints and safety plans to local police. But not day cares.

Ken Trump, nationally recognized school safety expert, said, "Why are we holding day cares with young children at a lower standard? It's unacceptable to me as a father, it's unacceptable to me as school safety professional and it's a huge gap in the law that needs to be corrected."
