CLEVELAND -- A Cleveland man walked out of prison Wednesday morning and is now free on bond after a judge ordered a new trial. Darrell Houston was greeted by family members and by NewsChannel5 investigator Ron Regan. His mother jumped into his arms. He then headed to Bowling Green University to see his sister, Jasmine. She was 4 years old when her brother went to prison. Now, she is a student at Bowling Green University. Houston hugged his Jasmine and cried when he saw her Wednesday afternoon. He said his sister would keep him strong throughout the ordeal, saying that she and their mom were going to get some help.In fact, NewsChannel5 found out about the case when Jasmine told NewsChannel5's Danita Harris about her brother.Five years ago, Regan began reporting on Houston, raising serious questions about his conviction. He thanked Regan and NewsChannel5 for helping him win a new trial.Houston spent 16 years in prison after being convicted in 1991 in the shooting death of a convenience store clerk."I'm not going to stop trying to regain my freedom no matter what the cost. How many years I have to spend here, I'll keep fighting until the truth comes out," said Houston. In a series of reports, questions were raised in Houston's case, including questions about a lack of evidence tying him to the crime and a witness who told NewsChannel5 that police arrested the wrong man."There's no reason that it would be him, and I know it's not him. In my heart, I know that," said witness James Pope. Two weeks ago, Judge Nancy Fuerst ruled that in the interest of justice, Houston deserves a new trial. He will remain free on a $75,000 bond while he awaits the start of his trial.
