Indians' Carmona Close To Returning

POSTED: 12:24 pm EDT July 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Fausto Carmona will throw a side session Tuesday and will make his return this weekend against Minnesota if all goes well.

Carmona has been on the disabled list since straining his left hip on May 23 against the Rangers. The righty suffered a setback a month ago that extended his time on the disabled list, but reported no problems in his recent rehab assignments.

The 24-year-old was a surprise Cy Young contender in 2007, going 19-8 with a 3.06 earned run average. Armed with an excellent sinker, Carmona continued his success this year with a 4-2 record and a 3.10 ERA this season before sustaining the injury.
