A Brooklyn neighborhood is mourning the loss of a local man who witnesses said was stabbed to death by his best friend.

The stabbing happened near the intersection of Northcliff and Pelham avenues early Saturday morning.

Witnesses told police and NewsChannel5 that they watched while one friend stabbed and killed 26-year-old Nicholas Prigodich.

Kathryn Durbin, who has lived on Northcliff Avenue for 40 years, said her neighbors had a cookout Friday, but there were no problems until she woke up to yelling.

"It's a little scary. This is something you watch on television all the time, and you never expect it to happen in your own back yard," Durbin said.

Police have not released the suspect's name. He remains in jail.

Authorities said they will continue to talk with witnesses to figure out why this happened.
