POSTED: 5:39 pm EDT May 16, 2008
UPDATED: 5:40 pm EDT May 16, 2008

The city of Lakewood will consider a proposal to ban pit bulls at next week's City Council meeting.

Lakewood Mayor Edward Fitzgerald has announced his support of the ban.

Officials said the number of pit bull complaints have risen over the years. There were 44 complaints last year and 31 dogs were impounded.

This year, a man was attacked and bitten in the face by a pit bull.

If the law passes, anyone who violates the ordinance will be guilty of a third-degree misdemeanor for a first offense and a first-degree misdemeanor for subsequent offenses.
