Staph Infection Spreads To Parma Heights High School

UPDATED: 6:38 pm EDT September 28, 2006

The Cuyahoga County Health Department is reminding local school districts to play it safe after a staph infection outbreak.

Valley Forge High School in Parma Heights is the latest football team hit with the infection.

One student was placed on antibiotics and had been cleared to resume practice with the team. Two other players have suspected cases of the infection after the entire team was screened Monday. They are waiting for test results.

All gym and athletic facilities and equipment in the school have been disinfected extensively.

Late Thursday afternoon, St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland announced possible cases of staph among the school's football team. However, school officials said that they are dealing with a different strain of the infection, which is responding to antibiotics.

Other cases of staph were reported in Lakewood, Berea and North Canton.

The Valley Forge team played Berea earlier this month.

Doctors said staph bacteria usually enters the body through an open cut or a break in the skin, putting football players at increased risk.
