CLEVELAND -- A new cosmetic procedure initially approved for treatment among AIDS patients is being used to get rid of wrinkles, NewsChannel5 health reporter Alicia Booth reported.Laurie Staltari, 47, wanted to look younger, so she used the procedure."At first, I thought I would just live with it and then I started dating again and I said, 'No, I have to make some changes,' " said Staltari, who is also a residency coordinator at the Cleveland Clinic."I just wanted a smoother look," she said. "I wanted to look a little more youthful. I didn't want to change my total look, I just wanted just a little more youth back."Staltari is trying out Sculptra. It was originally Food and Drug Administration approved for AIDS patients who wanted to make a drawn-looking face look fuller and healthier. The clinic's chief of plastic surgery started using it cosmetically."It plumps up the face, makes the face fuller and that's what the problem is in many patients with facial again," she said. "They look like, not only has their skin become lax, but also, they've lost facial fat."Cleveland Clinic's Dr. James Zins compare Sculptra to blowing up a balloon, the Sculptra goes in, the wrinkles come out.WEWS reported it's probably not for you if you're squeamish about needles. It's a lot bigger needle than the one used for Botox, Booth reported. However, patients are given a topical anesthetic. The big draw is the length of time the results can last."We are told that it lasts for as much as two years after treatment and it's very, very effective," Zins said. The results are subtle and after a few treatments, you’ll notice the difference. "Everyone comments on they can't quite figure out what looks different," Staltari said. "Am I getting facials? You look a little bit younger, your really look great."After three months, she said the procedure is worth it, Booth reported."So it's not a big dramatic change, it's just refreshing."
