Study Finds Possible Link Between Alcohol, Cancer

POSTED: 3:39 pm EDT August 12, 2005

Researchers believe they have uncovered a series of chemical reactions from drinking alcohol that could lead to cancer.

Researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology said Thursday they have developed a new chemical analysis method to investigate the potential link.

The researchers cited previous studies that found a relationship between excessive alcohol consumption and an increased risk of some cancers.

In the latest findings, the researchers said the alcohol itself isn't what directly causes the cancer, but they suspect a resulting metabolized component could possibly cause cancer. It is unclear, however, how the substances react inside the body, and the researchers said they did not identify the consequences.

The researchers said the chemicals produced might mutate some chemicals produced in cells that are believed to be involved in cell growth. They said the metabolized substance can be found in saliva after drinking alcohol and in the gastrointestinal tissues.
