California Dominates List Of Healthiest Cities

New Orleans Ranks Last

POSTED: 3:33 pm EDT June 16, 2005

A lot of the nation's healthiest cities are in California, according to a new study from Bert Sperling's BestPlaces and vitamin-maker Centrum. Five of the top 10 cities are in California, with San Jose leading the way.

The study considered five criteria in ranking the biggest 50 cities: mental wellness, lifestyle pursuits, physical activity, health status and diet.

Sperling said he's surprised that half of the top cities are in California. He attributes that to Californians' commitment to the way they look and feel. San Jose scored well in every category except mental wellness, in which its score is barely better than average.

On the bottom of the list is New Orleans. Fitness trainer Tavis Piatolly said that's because there's no place to walk and all the food is fried.

The top 10 cities on the list are:
  1. San Jose
  2. Washington, D.C.
  3. San Francisco
  4. Seattle metro area
  5. Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah
  6. Oakland, Calif.
  7. Sacramento, Calif.
  8. Orange County, Calif.
  9. Denver
  10. Austin-San Marcos, Texas

The 10 cities at the bottom of the list are:
    41. Columbus, Ohio
    42. Detroit
    43. New York
    44. Las Vegas
    45. Indianapolis
    46. Orlando, Fla.
    47. Cleveland metro area
    48. Cincinnati
    49. San Antonio
    50. New Orleans
