Nail Polishes May Contain Harmful Ingredient

Government Conducting Larger Study

UPDATED: 5:47 p.m. EST January 23, 2001

An environmental group has issued a list of popular nail polishes which include an ingredient that could cause birth defects, Five On Your Side Health Specialist Lee Jordan reported.

Some cosmetic companies use dibutyl phthalate to make nail polish resistant to chipping.

nail polish The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did a study that found that the chemical caused birth defects in rodents. The study also suggested that women between the ages of 15 and 45 absorbed more of the chemical than other people.

The Environmental Working Group issued a list of popular nail polishes which include dibutyl phthalate to let women know about the potential problems.

"The scientists at the CDC found dibutyl phthalate in 100 percent of the people tested," EWG spokeswoman Jane Houlihan reported. "They found it at the highest levels in women of childbearing age."

The government is doing a larger study on the chemical's effects.

Proctor & Gamble did its own study, and said that all of its nail polishes, including those on the EWG's list, are well within safety guidelines.
