CLEVELAND -- The low-carbohydrates, high-protein, diets are the latest trends in losing weight. But which one is the best?
NewsChannel5's Tracy Carloss went to an expert to compare the two most popular diets: the Atkins diet and the South Beach diet.
The Atkins diet first made the low-carb, high-protein popular, but now the South Beach is gaining followers.
David Kumler is a fan of the South Beach diet.
"When you looked at the do not eat list that was my staple diet, pasta's everything starchy," said Kumler.
Kumler went on the three-phase plan to help his girlfriend lose weight. Now, he's down 15 pounds since July.
"I'm down an inch on my waist, feeling good, feeling healthy and she's noticing the difference," said Kumler.
Deb Fisher, a former junk-food junkie, started the Atkins diet in April. By eating a steady diet of protein Fisher has lost 42 pounds.
"When you notice within two weeks immediate results, it makes you more determined," said Fisher.
Mary Beth Kavanagh, of Case Western Reserve University, said the South Beach diet is better because it is healthier.
"The Atkins diet eliminates all carbs and the weight you lose is water weight. It is unhealthy to be in that form of ketosis for too long. So the South Beach diet is healthier in that there are some carbs in the diet," said Kavanagh.
Experts say that exercising and eating less is still the best recipe for losing weight.
