Teens Potentially Harming Health

A new study shows more and more young girls are doing something that could really hurt them down the road.

tanning bed

NewsChannel5 health team reporter Alicia Booth reported on the latest research on the dangers of tanning beds.

Researchers from Case Western Reserve and University Hospitals have found that more than one-third of teenage girls have gone tanning at least once, and many of those have used one three or more times.

A higher percentage of indoor tanners come from the Midwest and the south.

The study says the majority of teens do not appreciate the dangers of UV rays and the harm they can do.

"We've seen it in the laboratory and we've seen it in the patients that ultra violet rays cause a lot of damage. I definitely would discourage teenagers from ever going into tanning booths," said Dr. Elma Barron of University Hospitals.

Barron says kids should not be going to those tanning booths at all and that we need to stop viewing tan skin as looking good.
