CLEVELAND -- A local grocery store chain is helping families beat the high cost of antibiotics by offering some of them for free.If your doctor prescribes one of the qualifying generic antibiotics, participating Giant Eagle pharmacies will give you up to a 14-day supply for free. They include the common antibiotics doctors prescribe most often such as amoxicillin, penicillin and tetracycline. There is no limit on the number of prescriptions you can fill, and it covers new prescriptions as well as refills. The new program is being introduced Thursday because it's back-to-school season when kids and adults become more susceptible to bacteria-related illness that require antibiotics, Giant Eagle said.If you use Giant Eagle's $4 and $10 prescription programs, they're still available. The free antibiotics program is an extension of that. The prescription antibiotics available under the program are:
- Amoxicillin
- Ampicilin
- Cephalexin
- Ciprofloxacin
- Doxycycline
- Erythromycin
- Penicillin
- Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim
- Tetracycline
- Bacitracin
