Up to 30 percent of all cancers are linked to poor diet.

NewsChannel5 anchor Lee Jordan reported that there are some powerful cancer-fighting foods you can incorporate in your diet to reduce your risk of breast cancer.

No question that at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day will promote breast health.

When you're picking out your produce, Cleveland Clinic Dietician Amy Jamieson-Petonic said, grab some broccoli first.

"Broccoli really is some kind of superfood when it comes to breast health," she said. "It has something called isothiocyanates that helps break down breast cancer cells."

Also, look for foods loaded with beta-carotene. Too little beta carotene has been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer.

"So you want to consume foods like carrots, pumpkin, apricots, bright orange colored veggies -- they'll really reduce your breast cancer risk," Jamieson-Petonic said.

Adding mushrooms to your diet could impact risk. They contain linoleic acid, which studies have shown slow down the production of estrogen, a factor in breast cancer.

"Go for the cabbage, the red-purple cabbage, to reduce breast cancer risk. Red cabbage has a chemical called glucosinolates, really help reduce breast cancer risk, another power food on program," Jamieson-Petonic said.

Garlic can be one of your most potent allies in fighting breast cancer.

"It has these compounds called allyl sulfur. It reduces the risk of cancer cells in the body, so that's another great food," she said. "People need to remember when using garlic to chop and let it sit for 10 minutes to allow compounds to fully form, because it takes time for compounds to reach full level."

Wild salmon, rich in vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, may fight tumor growth. It is the sixth cancer fighter on the list.

"The reason you want wild salmon is it tends to have fewer cancer causing chemicals such as PCBs," she said.

Eating a balanced diet filled with fresh produce, whole grains, and lean sources of protein will keep your weight in check as well serve as one of the best defenses against breast cancer.

Other breast-cancer fighting foods:

  • Broccoli sprouts
  • Berries
  • Soybeans
  • Green Tea
  • Spinach
  • Pineapple
  • Apples
  • Beans
  • Whole grains
  • Grapes
  • Flaxseed
