Secret To Great Sex May Be In Your Diet

Food, Supplements Can Enhance Sex Life, Author Says

What you eat may help you enjoy sex more.

Marrena Lindberg, author of Orgasmic Diet, says a balanced diet -- along with plenty of high-grade fish oil supplements -- can help women reach full satisfaction more easily.

"I tell women to take fish oil like a drug," Lindberg said.

Lindberg's book discusses how following a good diet, along with exercising the pubococcygeus muscle can help women. The PC muscle controls urine flow and contracts during sex, and exercises can increase a woman's libido. Many women may know this type of exercise as Kegels.

The diet she suggests also includes a small portion of dark chocolate each day, as well as a daily dose of multivitamins, magnesium and iron supplements.

Lindberg, who is an environmental researcher, said a balanced diet will contribute to healthy dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain. Fish oil is also good for boosting dopamine and improving overall circulation. It also increases nitric oxide to the bloodstream, which is similar to drugs used by men with sexual problems.

Hormones Play Role

A woman's testosterone level is also an integral role to getting the most out of sex.

An appropriate testosterone level can be maintained by eating foods that contain saturated fat in moderation.

"Quite simply, free testosterone puts a tiger in your tank. It makes you think of men (and) sex ... You notice how men smell, how they look, how wonderful their bodies are," Lindberg writes in the book.

Lindberg said she happened upon these keys after having difficulty in her own life. She changed her diet and then realized that she was experiencing greater fulfillment.

After the initial shock and excitement, Lindberg recruited others to follow a diet regimen to find out if it would have the same effects. She says it did.

Consult Physician

Anyone interested in starting her diet should consult a physician first, because fish oil can work like aspirin and work as a blood thinner.

The high-grade fish oil needed for the diet should have eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic, known as EPA and DHA, Lindberg says. For a woman who is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds, Lindberg suggests 1700 mg of EPA and 1300 of DHA per day.

Lindberg encourages hot baths to increase blood circulation to important parts of the body.

Foods To Avoid

There are a few things that women should avoid, she said. They include caffeine, herbal stimulants, starchy and sugary foods, antidepressants, hormonal birth control, soy and omega-6 fatty acids.

Lindberg said the diet typically takes two weeks to show changes, but it may take longer for some women.

Whole-Body Approach

Some experts point out that a woman making changes to her body isn't the only key to having a good time. Miriam Davis a sex therapist in West Palm Beach, Fla., believes that the key to good sex is a woman's attitude toward sex and toward pleasure.

"A lot of women let the man make all the moves without showing him what to do," she said. "We all have different histories on what turns us on."

Davis said a woman has to be open about what pleases her. Even more important than open lines of communication is the way a woman feels about herself and her body, she said.

One's overall health also plays an important role in the ability to achieve orgasm.

For example, Davis, who provides counseling sessions via e-mail and telephone, said certain medications, such as antidepressants, preclude women from feeling everything she wants to. Also, a woman may be experiencing resentment or anger.

"If a couple is quarreling, a man can forget and have pleasure," Davis said. "A woman cannot. Men see sex as a stress reliever and women have to be stress-free to enjoy sex."

Older Women

During menopause, there are several hormonal changes that affect a woman's ability to get ready for sex. Lindberg stressed that her diet is good for women of all ages, including menopausal women.

Davis said it is important to remember that a lot of women enjoy sex without worrying too much about the ending.

"They have that glow, and it's very pleasurable for them," she said.
