    May 4, 1970

The end of the spring semester at Kent State in 1970 brought with it rallies and protests about the Vietnam War and Cambodia.

Tensions were on the rise when the ROTC building on campus was set on fire. Soon, the National Guard was brought in and hostility increased.

On May 4, a crowd of about 1,500 gathered in the Commons. Tear gas was used to try to disperse the crowd, and stones were thrown back and forth among the Guard and the protesters.

In just 13 seconds, 67 shots were fired.

Four  were killed: Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder. Nine others were injured.
