The historical significance of the 1970 shootings on the Kent State University that left four students dead and nine wounded will be chronicled in a visitors center opening on the northeast Ohio campus.
Kent State University will officially open it’s May 4 Visitors Center on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The end of the spring semester at Kent State in 1970 brought with it rallies and protests about the Vietnam War and Cambodia.
Tensions were on the rise when the ROTC building on campus was set on fire. Soon, the National Guard was brought in and hostility increased.
On May 4, a crowd of about 1,500 gathered in the Commons. Tear gas was used to try to disperse the crowd, and stones were thrown back and forth among the Guard and the protesters.
In just 13 seconds, 67 shots were fired.
Four were killed: Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder. Nine others were injured.
