Parents Warn Kids Not To Use 'Club Drugs'
Studies Show Illicit Drug Use Down
"Club drugs" are becoming more and more popular with teens.
Strong says that parents may worry about alcohol, marijuana or cocaine, but many kids say that the drugs passed around at parties and clubs are substances with which their parents aren't familiar.
"Yeah, there's drugs out there today my mom wouldn't even understand," 17-year-old Dwayne says.
Kids say that the "club drugs" are even available on the Internet. Some sites even suggest so-called safe ways to use drugs like ecstasy and GHB. Experts warn that using the drugs could prove deadly.
"There's a very fine line between the get-high point of using GHB and the lethal dosage of GHB, so there have been a lot of instances where people have gone into a coma or have died from using that," says Barbara Mooney, a counselor.
After 34 deaths were attributed to the club drugs in the past year, the National Institute on Drug Abuse launched its own Web site to publish some of its research on the dangerous side effects.
Experts say that parents need to be vigilant in looking for signs of drug use, such as dilated pupils, slurred speech and agitated behavior.
