CLEVELAND -- Two northeast Ohio cities have made the list of most dangerous cities for different reasons. The city of Cleveland has been ranked the 20th most dangerous city in the country. And the city of Parma is listed as the 14th safest city. The results of the 11th annual Safest City Award were announced Monday by Morgan Quitno Press, a Lawrence, Ka.-based publishing and research company. The rankings compared 354 cities with populations of 75,000 or more that reported 2003 crime statistics to the FBI. They looked at six categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and auto theft. Camden, N.J. has been named the nation's most-dangerous city, snatching the top spot from Detroit, which came in second in this year's list. Atlanta, St. Louis and Gary, Ind. rounded out the top five in the most dangerous city rankings. The news wasn't all bleak for New Jersey. The state's Brick Township was rated the second-safest city for the third straight year, behind only Newton, Mass. The other communities in the top five were Amherst, N.Y., which had been ranked as the safest city for the past four years, followed by Mission Viejo, Calif., and Clarkstown, N.Y. The other Ohio cities in the list of most dangerous include, Dayton at No. 21 and Cincinnati at No. 25. Columbus is the seventh most dangerous in cities with a population over 500,000. While Youngstown ranks seventh in most dangerous cities with a population of 75,000 TO 99,999, the study showed that it was one of the most improved cities since last year's rankings were released.
